“Medicine is, essentially, a science of observation, in which experimentation is only a minor part of the medical investigation. But the worst of it is that this minor part has been contaminated by a gross error – that of having taken animals as models for humans.” Professor Dr Pietro Croce
In Canada, health research is too often dependent on the use of animal models. This type of research is publishable, easy, well funded, and argued to be the source of medical progress. However, an increasing number of individuals, including scientists and doctors demonstrate its lack of clinical relevance and validity.
What sort of therapy or treatment do we owe to today's animal experiments?
How modern-day research justifies the use of animals?
Are alternatives to animal experiments actively searched for?
Write your government and the health authorities to ask for formal funding of alternatives, better health education and prevention.
Please, write the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Health Minister and the media to let your opinion be known. Know that the voices of a few echoes the worries of many more and potiticians and decision-makers are sensitive to that fact.
Also, support the organizations working to promote the modernization of health research. Remember that major changes in history were often the results of the dedication of a few committed people.
Lend them your support. Your health and that of your loved ones depend on it.
